This talk presents several physical background of discontinuous dynamical systems and discusses theoretical issues in analysis and synthesis problem for discontinuous systems. Two examples of design problem will be presented. First, a state feedback design for a class of discontinuous systems will be presented and then, some automotive system control problem, which is a typical hybrid systems consisting of continuous dynamics with delay and discontinuous events, will be introduced to motive advanced control theory. Some experimental results with physical background will be also demonstrated.

Tielong Shen received the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan. From April 1992, he has been a faculty member of the Chair of Control Engineering in Department of Mechanical Engineering, Sophia University, where he currently serves as Professor. From 1996, he was concurrently serving as Professor for several universities in China including Luojia Chair Professor of Wuhan University etc. His research interests include control theory and application in mechanical systems, power systems, and automotive powertrain.
From 1997, he has been serving as Chief Editor of Control Technique, Vice Chief Editor of Control Theory for the Transaction of SICE, Japan, and served as Guest Editor of International Journal on Robust and Nonlinear Control from 2002 to 2003. Currently, he is Associate Editor of the IEEE Control System Society Conference Editorial Board, and is serving as Associate Editor of Journal of Control Theory and Applications, and the Regional Editor (Asia-Pacific) of International Journal of Modeling, Identification and Control. He is now also serving as a member of the GB of Control Society of SICE, Chair of the Committee of SICE on Advanced Powertrain Control Theory, a member of TCCT of the Chinese Automation Society, Guan Zhao Zhi Award Committee, and a member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Automotive Control, and a member of IFAC Technical Committee on Automotive Control.
